About the Contest

Welcome to our first, big event in the Victoria Theater Arts Center Minecraft Server: an Ice Palace Building Contest!

In the summer of 2021 we created the VTAC Minecraft Server. It was created both out of the need for a virtual gathering place during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and as a place to show an interactive representation of what our physical space will look like once it is renovated (to learn more about the Victoria Theater renovation and Capital Campaign, click here). As our server developed and grew, VTAC Minecraft has become a place where artists and community can connect, where local youth and crafters can meet in a creative space, and where innovative ideas can come to life.

The Minecraft Ice Palace Contest combines art, history, technology, and community building in a fun, family friendly experience. Within our VTAC Minecraft Server, you will have the opportunity to make your very own ice palace in a special arctic biome area along with other avid Minecraft and ice palace enthusiasts. There are three age groups for building/judging; Youth (12 and under), Teen (13-17), and Adult (18 and above) and participants are welcome to build solo or as part of a team.
Prizes: Winners will receive an official certificate, have an image of their palace published in the Saint Paul Monitor, receive a limited edition poster featuring their palace, AND get a $20 gift card to IPho by Saigon Vietnamese Restaurant, one of our valued community business partners.

Bob Olsen: Ice Palace Historian

Picture
Bob Olsen will be one of our key judges for the contest. With a deep knowledge of Ice Palace history and construction, he is an excellent resource for preparing to craft your own Minecraft ice palace.
Watch this video lecture to learn more about ice palace construction and history, and to get building inspiration for your own palace.
One of our contest judging criteria is 'Real-world Feasibility', and this video will help you know how it's done in real life.

Contest Rules

  1. Every contestant must register and pay a $5 participation fee. If the participation fee will cause you financial hardship, please contact sydney@victoriatheater.org and we can offer you a scholarship for the event.
  2. All participants must abide by our general server rules. Any violation of these rules will cause your disqualification and potential loss of access to the server in future events and open build hours. See these rules in our Discord here.
  3. Intentional destruction of anything you did not build, bullying, or preventing others from moving freely in the server will cause disqualification and potential loss of access to the server in future events and open build hours.
  4. You have 3 hours to build your structure during the event. Your entire structure must start and finish during that time period. If you would like to practice your build beforehand, we will have open server hours on Sunday, January 16th, 2022 and Sunday, January 23rd, 2022 from 2 pm - 4 pm on both days.
  5. When you finish your structure, you must notify one of our coordinate takers/helpers and they will record your location for judging. If you do not do this, we may overlook your palace during the judging process. You should also create a sign with the name of your structure and your registration number to go outside of your build.
  6. Structures will be judged by Ice Palace Historian Bob Olsen and two volunteer youth judges that are well-versed in Minecraft. We will judge your structure on the following criteria:
Creativity and Uniqueness: Your structure is unique and uses artistic creativity that sets it apart from others
Quality: The quality of the build based on the engineering and Minecraft materials and techniques.
Real-World Feasibility: Would your structure work in the real world? Do any of the elements of your build reflect traditional ice palace engineering techniques and traditions?
Clarity of Theme: Does your structure have a clear theme and does it incorporate some element of Ice Palace history that you learned from watching the lecture with Bob Olsen or your personal research?
  7. The winner in each age group will be announced by February 5th, 2022 before the end of the Winter Carnival.
  8. The winner will receive a certificate of achievement from VTAC, The Saint Paul Winter Carnival, and Bob Olsen; an image of the winning structure will also be printed in February issue of The Saint Paul Monitor and the image reproduced on a limited edition event poster.
